If you really want cheap, you can do a room at the YMCA (5 West 63rd st). Also check out The Belnord, La Quinta (31 West 71st St.), and Night Hotel Broadway (215 West 94th st). Like others have said, definitely steer clear of Times Square. Way too expensive for the size/quality of the room. I would not stay anywhere near times square, including the rest of midtown, for NYE.
