You just had bad luck. Lava charm is rare to find in chests in ordinary seeds. No surprise that it’s hard to get in the Zenith seed. If you’ve got a magma stone you can shimmer that into a lava charm. Or, as you’ve said, fish. You could also farm Hell Bats for a Fire Stone and turn it into a lava charm using shimmer. Keep slicing the grass with a sword or weapon of your choice and mushrooms should grow too. Keep the mushrooms as a favorite in your inventory and eat 1 whenever you get hungry. It will give you potion sickness but, if you are in a boss fight you should have eaten beforehand anyway. It works very well.
